Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Activity Overview

In this activity, students analyze statistical data using the calculator and the TI InterActive!™ software. They use linear regression to study the increase in levels of carbon dioxide emission over the years.

Before the Activity

  • Download the TI Connect™ software to transfer data from the computer to the calculator
  • Link the TI Connect to the calculator
  • Install the TI InterActive! on the computer
  • Print pages 1 - 2 from the attached PDF file for the class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the printed pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Download the data table into the data editor
  • Name the lists and copy the list tables into a document
  • Export the data from the computer to the calculator
  • Plot a graph of Carbon Dioxide Emissions versus Number of Years
  • Perform a linear regression [on the calculator or on TI InterActive] and find a line of best fit
  • Use the graph editor to include the best fit line on the graph
  • Graph the CO2 emissions per capita by year
  • Plot a graph of CO2 emissions per unit of GDP
  • Based on the regression curve, answer questions listed on the activity pages
  • After the Activity

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
