Steady-State Circuit Analysis & Filter Design

Activity Overview

This activity shows how the handheld implements phasors to perform sinusoidal steady-state analysis. The focus is on how to enter and display complex numbers.

Before the Activity

See the attached Activity PDF file(s) for detailed instructions for this activity.
This activity also shows a typical steady-state application and how to use the Numeric Solver to find the required order of lowpass Butterworth and Chebyshev filters in making a standard "handbook" filter design.

During the Activity

Follow the procedures outlined in the activity.
Students will:

  • Be able to enter, solve, and display equations with complex numbers.
  • Solve multiple equations with multiple complex unknowns.
  • Solve complex numbers using a matrix approach.
  • After the Activity

  • Review student answers
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
