NCTE: Exploring Sitting in a Setting

Activity Overview

Students will read a variety of short paragraphs that describe various settings, and then send their individual responses to the teacher?s PC. The teacher projects their responses anonymously for the entire class to view and discuss.

Before the Activity

See the attached Activity PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity.

Print the appropriate pages from the Activity for your class.

Install the LearningCheck(tm) App on the students' graphing calculators following the attached instructions.

During the Activity

  • Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class
  • Distribute the LearningCheck(tm) file(s) to your class using TI Connect(tm) and the appropriate TI Connectivity cable
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Activity


  • Students will:
  • Write about their observations.
  • Gain a strong understanding of the purpose of setting.
  • Understand the characteristics of powerful and descriptive language.
  • Recognize the relationship between choice of language and audience response.
  • Work effectively with other peers.
  • Make productive use of student feedback.
  • Create a final polished composition that describes a setting using vivid language.
  • After the Activity

    When the groups have completed their written response to their assigned example, the teacher should lead a discussion of the students' responses. Have one member of each group read the response to the assigned example. During the discussion, the teacher should focus on how the group's feelings about a place (tone) are related to the types of language used. Be sure to point out the unified tone in each of the samples by careful word choice.
