NCTE: What's Missing?

Activity Overview

After the teacher shares an example of a "What's Missing?" paragraph, students will write their own incomplete paragraphs for other students to complete.

Before the Activity

See the attached Activity PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity.

Print the appropriate pages from the Activity for your class.

Install the LearningCheck™ App on the students' graphing calculators following the attached instructions.

Make an overhead transparency of the "What's Missing?" teacher page in this activity. Using the overhead projector, present to the students the example paragraph. Give the students 5-10 minutes to fill in the blanks. Offer extra credit for students who come up with more than one possible word for a given blank.

During the Activity

  • Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class
  • Distribute the LearningCheck file(s) to your class using TI Connect™ and the appropriate TI Connectivity cable
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Activity

  • Students will use their knowledge of sentence and word structure, word origins, visual images, and context clues to understand unfamiliar words and clarify passages of text.

    After the Activity

Have the students exchange their paragraphs by using the unit-to-unit cable. The writer of the paragraph can grade the paper, though it might be interesting to have a third student be the grader.
