Translating Sines

Activity Overview

Students explore translations of sine graphs and understand how changes to the original function change the period and/or amplitude of the graph.

Key Steps

  • Image

Students will explore the translations of sine graphs. For each function, students will be able to see the original and translated functions side-by-side and drag a point across the new function to visualize the change. First, students will see what happens when the original function is multiplied by a constant.

  • Image

Next, students will analyze how the sine function is shifted in any direction by adding a constant to the function or to the input of the function.

Finally, students will see the affect of multiplying the function, or the input of the function, but a constant. By the end of this lesson, students will understand how changes to the original function will change the period and/or amplitude of the graph.
