NCTE: Collaborating on Personal Response

Activity Overview

Students will work in groups of two and read two poems that are about the same topic. They will create Venn diagrams to compare and contrast the poems together, and then will work individually to compare and contrast each poem with their own views.

Explain lesson objectives. Review with students the elements of a personal response. Emphasize that a personal response should include specific quotations and clearly connect those quotations to the response. Review the directions for the activity, including how to create Venn diagrams.

During the Activity

  • Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class
  • Distribute the LearningCheck file(s) to your class using TI Connect™ and the appropriate TI Connectivity cable
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Activity


  • Students will:
  • Read the poem "Thanatopsis" and consider motivations for its creation.
  • Practice writing a personal response.
  • Compare and contrast student views with poet views.
  • Write a collaborative personal response to "Thanatopsis."
  • Identify significant quotations and explain personal reactions to them and to the poem as a whole.
  • Explain insights gained by reading the poem, if any.
  • After the Activity

    Students will submit their personal responses using the TI Connectivity cable or TI-Navigator™. Answer any questions.
