NCTE: Exploring Writing about Art

Activity Overview

Students will visit an art exhibit at a museum and use several different writing prompts to write about the artwork. They will write about art, use different strategies to write, exercise their interpretation skills, and express their creativity.

Before the Activity

See the attached Activity PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity.

Print the appropriate pages from the Activity for your class.

Install the NoteFolio(tm) App on the students' graphing calculators following the attached instructions.

Determine whether the students will choose their group members or if the teacher will assign the groups. Be sure that the students know their group members and understand the directions before they are set loose in the art exhibit. This will minimize any confusion that might occur from the students not understanding what is expected of them.

During the Activity

  • Distribute the appropriate pages from the Activity to your class
  • Distribute the NoteFolio(tm) file(s) to your class using TI Connect(tm) and the appropriate TI Connectivity cable
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Activity

  • Students will:
  • Develop an appreciation for art.
  • Employ a variety of strategies to comprehend and interpret texts.
  • Practice strengthening their writing fluency.
  • Interact with other students to discuss their interpretation of artwork.
  • Create a series of journal responses to art.
  • Utilize portable handheld devices to gather information.
  • Produce a final written piece that demonstrates their ability to be reflective and critical of texts.
  • Assess their own learning.
  • After the Activity

The teacher should explain to the students that they will share their writings for each prompt with their group members. Therefore, they may want to take some time to reread and edit what they wrote at the museum for homework. Each student should send their writing for the day to the teacher for assessment.
