In this activity, students will use an interactive model that multiplies the fraction by "1" to help determine the common denominator. Then they will use what they have learned to add and subtract fractions without the same denominators.
In this activity, an interactive model allows students to create an equivalent fraction. They are asked to change pairs of fractions, so that they have a common denominator. The arrows to the right of the fractions will change the fraction. Students will do this for pairs of fractions where the common denominator is a product of the two denominators and then again for pairs of fractions where the common denominator is not the product.
Students will then use what they have learned about finding a common denominator to add and subtract fractions. They will repeat the necessary steps to create fractions with the same denominator and then complete the addition problem at the bottom of the screen.
