Students observe tables of values to see that inequalities are true for some values of the variable and not for others.
About the Lesson
Students will use the LINEQUA calculator program to explore one-variable inequalities. First they will investigate a table of values, determining when a column comparing the left and right sides of the inequality produces the number 1 for true and the number 0 for false. Then students will investigate the graph of inequalities, comparing the inequality symbols and how they are represented in the graph. Finally, students will solve inequalities using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will be able to compare the starting inequality with the solution. Students will explore when the inequality symbol is reversed/flipped.
