Drop, Drop, Fizz, Fizz - Does it really cool me off?

Activity Overview

In this activity, students will determine what, if any, affect alka seltzer has on the temperature of water. Students will use a temperature probe to record the temperature and their calculator to draw conclusions from the data.

Before the Activity

Before beginning this activity, download the student activity worksheet. It will give the student directions on what to do during the activity. It is important to note that the measurements in this activity can only be taken in Celsius if using the temperature probe.

During the Activity

During the activity, monitor student progress. If students mess up, they can easily restart the experiment, as long as you have enough alka seltzer! If the TI-nspire™ doesn't recognize the temperature probe, you can automatically start it from the menu. Choose tools and data collection.

After the Activity

After the activity, discuss with students the results of their experiment. This activity serves as a good starting point to explaining the meaning of slope in terms of a problem.
