Activity Overview
Students graph systems of linear inequalities and investigate the concepts of constraints and feasible polygons.
Before the Activity
Install the Inequality Graphing Application on the calculator using one of these two methods:
- TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
- TI-Navigator™ "send to class" feature
See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
Print pages 27-31 from the attached PDF file for your class
During the Activity
Distribute the pages to the class.
Follow the Activity procedures:
Write down three linear inequalities with two variables and plot them on a graph paper
Enter two inequalities in the calculator in the slope-intercept form, and the third inequality in the X= editor of the calculator
Verify the graphs by using the Inequality Graphing application on the calculator and shade the common region
Record the ordered pairs that are solutions of the inequality system
Verify algebraically whether the points in the shaded region satisfy the system
Trace the coordinates of the vertices of the triangle that forms the solution set
After the Activity
Students will complete the Student Worksheet and answer questions.
Review student results:
As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
Re-teach concepts as necessary
