Integration By Parts

Activity Overview

Students investigate the product rule of differentiation and integration by parts.

Key Steps

Students will consolidate earlier work on the product rule and on methods of integration. The lesson offers a suitable introduction to the method of integration by parts.
Students can draw together observations and see the significance of this method. Integration by parts allows students to find the integral of a function that is a product by taking the derivative of one component and the integral of the other.
Students will practice questions that are provided.
At the end of this activity, students will be able to derive the formula for Integration by Parts and compute integrals using it.
