Matrices and Linear Equations

Published on 07/30/2005

Activity Overview

This Computer Algebra System (CAS) activity encourages students to investigate addition, subtraction, and multiplication of matrices. They find the inverse of a matrix. Students also solve a set of linear equations by using matrices.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 1 - 7 from the attached PDF file for the class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Perform operations like addition, subtraction, and multiplication on matrices
  • Examine the unit matrix
  • Find the product of a scalar and a matrix
  • Determine the inverse of a matrix
  • Understand that finding the inverse replaces the idea of division
  • Solve a system of linear equations using matrices
  • After the Activity

Students' answer questions on the Activity sheet.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
