Learning Measurement Conversions through Statistics

Published on 02/17/2006

Activity Overview

Students learn the conversion relationship between inches and centimeters through data collection. The data collected results from measuring items using inches and centimeters as the units.
They use a TI-73 to input the data into lists and analyze the data. A discussion of accuracy and precision easily follows after determining the equation of the relationship between the two units.

Before the Activity

Students should have access to the TI-73 Explorer.

During the Activity

The attached document contains the activity guide along with a student data collection sheet.

After the Activity

Review student answers:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
