Activity Overview

In this activity, students use the Derive™ software to compute binomial, hypergeometric, standard normal and normal probabilities, and explore inverse normal computations.

Before the Activity

  • Install the Derive 6™ software on the computer
  • See the attached PDF or DFW file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print the attached PDF file or the DFW file for the class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • For binomial distribution calculate the probability of certain number of successes
  • Find the probability of x defectives in a sample of size n for a hypergeometrical distribution
  • Find the probability for a randomly distributed normal variable
  • Study normal distribution with mean and standard deviation and perform Inverse Normal calculations
  • After the Activity

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
