The Pythagorean Theorem (Part 2)

Activity Overview

Students will:

  • Construct a square.
  • Divide each side of the square using the same length to construct four congruent triangles and an inner square.
  • Show that the Pythagorean relationship holds using an algebraic and numeric approach.
  • Before the Activity

Provide each student with a copy of the attached .pdf document.

    During the Activity

This activity will help students visualize the areas involved in a right- angled triangle and uses some basic algebra involving the sum of areas in the diagram to prove that the Pythagorean relationship holds. The numeric approach confirms the algebraic result.

    After the Activity

  • Review student answers
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
