Activity Overview
In this activity, students will use the motion detector to measure their current height and obtain a mean value. They will use this and earlier data to plot a graph of height versus age. Students will identify the mathematical model that reflects the pattern of the data and calculate the rate of growth in humans.
Before the Activity
Install the CBL/CBR Application on the students' graphing calculators using TI Connect™, or TI-GRAPH LINK™, TI Connectivity cable and the unit-to-unit link cable
Connect the TI-73 Explorer™ to the CBR 2™ unit
See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
Print pages 1 - 9 from the attached PDF file for your class
During the Activity
Distribute the pages to the class.
Follow the Activity procedures:
Use the CBR to record three readings of the student's current height
Calculate the mean value
Gather measurements of student's height at earlier ages
Set up a scatter plot and get a Manual-Fit on the collected data
Convert the growth rate from inches per year to centimeters per year, and then to centimeters per month
Predict a person's height at various ages
Relate growth rate to the slope of the line
After the Activity
Students will fill in the Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.
Review student results:
As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
Re-teach concepts as necessary
