Activity Overview
In this activity, students will collect temperature and light readings over a 25 hour time period and explore relationships between and within the data. They will discover the relationships of temperature with sunrise and sunset and look at long term relationships in the environment.
Before the Activity
Install the CBL/CBR Application on the students' graphing calculators using TI Connect™ or TI-GRAPH LINK™, TI Connectivity cable and the unit-to-unit link cable
Connect the TI-73 to the CBL 2™ unit
Connect the light and temperature probes to Channel 1 and Channel 2 of the CBL 2 unit
See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
Print pages 63 - 83 from the attached PDF file for your class
During the Activity
Distribute the pages to your class.
Follow the Activity procedures:
Place the CBL in a place where external light sources do not contaminate the light sensor, and where the temperature probe can be exposed to the outside air
Decide on a start and end time, which should cover the sunrise and sunset times
Set up the CBL to collect readings for light and temperature every 15 minutes for 25 hours
Enter the start and end times of your experiment
Observe the time versus temperature and time versus light graphs
Do one-variable statistics for the data
After the Activity
Students will fill in the Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.
Review student results:
As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
Re-teach concepts as necessary
