Inequalities, They Are Not Just Linear Anymore!

Activity Overview

Students study quadratic relationships and explore the process of graphing quadratic inequalities and systems of quadratic inequalities. They will solve these inequalities algebraically and graph them on a coordinate plane.

Before the Activity

Install the Inequality Graphing Application on the calculator using one of these two methods:

  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™ "send to class" feature

See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
Print pages 59-67 from the attached PDF file for your class

During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Graph the equation y = x2
  • Locate points and algebraically determine if they are part of the solution set of the inequality y > x2
  • Observe that all the points that are part of the solution set lie inside the parabola y = x2
  • Use the Inequality Graphing Application to graph the inequality and verify the observation
  • Graph a system of quadratic inequalities
  • Predict if the two inequalities intersect in one or more points
  • Use the Inequality Graphing application to verify the prediction
  • Use the Inequality Graphing application to graph another system of quadratic inequalities

After the Activity

Students will complete the Student Worksheet and answer questions.

Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
