Students explore rational functions graphically and algebraically to identify singularities and asymptotes, both vertical and horizontal.

Key Steps

Students engage in an exploration of asymptotes involving graphing, exploration of a table of values, and algebraic manipulation.
Factoring is applied as a means to identify singularities and determine vertical asymptote locations.
Students explore what happens to the horizontal asymptotes as values for coefficients and exponents change in the numerator and denominator of a rational function.
