Activity Overview
In this activity, students will match their motion to a given graph by moving back and forth in front of a CBR unit. They will then describe their movements by writing a piece-wise defined equation for the motion.
Before the Activity
Connect the calculator to the CBR 2™
Install the TI Connect™ software to analyze data on the computer
See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
Print pages 33 - 37 from the attached PDF file for your class
During the Activity
Distribute the pages to your class.
Follow the Activity procedures:
Run the Ranger program on the calculator
Set the CBR on a table so that it is aimed at the waist or chest of the walker
Place a piece of tape 0.5 meter from the CBR and then every 0.5 meter for 4 meters
Walk back and forth in front of a CBR and observe the distance versus time graph displayed on the calculator
Divide the graph into sections and record the coordinates of the first and the last points for each section
Find the y-intercept of each line to determine the starting position
Calculate the slope to find the velocity
After the Activity
Students will complete the Data Collection table and answer questions listed in it.
Review student results
As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
Re-teach concepts as necessary
