Activity Overview

In this activity, students will match their motion to a given graph by moving back and forth in front of a CBR unit. They will then describe their movements by writing a piece-wise defined equation for the motion.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the calculator to the CBR 2™
  • Install the TI Connect™ software to analyze data on the computer
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 33 - 37 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Run the Ranger program on the calculator
  • Set the CBR on a table so that it is aimed at the waist or chest of the walker
  • Place a piece of tape 0.5 meter from the CBR and then every 0.5 meter for 4 meters
  • Walk back and forth in front of a CBR and observe the distance versus time graph displayed on the calculator
  • Divide the graph into sections and record the coordinates of the first and the last points for each section
  • Find the y-intercept of each line to determine the starting position
  • Calculate the slope to find the velocity
  • After the Activity

Students will complete the Data Collection table and answer questions listed in it.

    Review student results

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
