Spread of Disease with Differential Equations

Activity Overview

Students will use the graphing calculator to solve a differential equation. The resulting function is a logistic curve that gives the number of people infected with the flu "t" days after winter break.

Before the Activity

See the attached Activity PDF file(s) for detailed instructions for this activity.

During the Activity

Follow the procedures outlined in the activity.

Students will:

  • Use the Computer Algebra System (CAS) of the graphing calculator to solve a differential equation that describes the rate of spread of a disease.
  • After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
