Who Says a Watched Pot Never Boils?

Activity Overview

In this activity, students' will investigate what causes phase changes in matter. They will use a temperature sensor to measure the temperature of a substance and identify visual clues to the phase changes.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the TI-73 to the CBL 2 unit
  • Connect the temperature sensor to Channel 1 in the CBL 2 unit
  • Download TI Connect™ software
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 115 - 120 from the attached PDF file for your class

During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Heat ice and water in a beaker using a hot plate, and note temperature changes as the ice melts, and the water boils
  • Use the temperature sensor to find the temperature when the water changes state and observe what happens to the temperature
  • Record the temperature and use it to plot a graph
  • Determine the melting point and the boiling point of water
  • After the Activity

Students' will fill in the Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
