Activity Overview
In this activity, students' will investigate what causes phase changes in matter. They will use a temperature sensor to measure the temperature of a substance and identify visual clues to the phase changes.
Before the Activity
- Connect the TI-73 to the CBL 2 unit
- Connect the temperature sensor to Channel 1 in the CBL 2 unit
- Download TI Connect™ software
- See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
- Print pages 115 - 120 from the attached PDF file for your class
During the Activity
Distribute the pages to your class.
Follow the Activity procedures:
Heat ice and water in a beaker using a hot plate, and note temperature changes as the ice melts, and the water boils
Use the temperature sensor to find the temperature when the water changes state and observe what happens to the temperature
Record the temperature and use it to plot a graph
Determine the melting point and the boiling point of water
After the Activity
Students' will fill in the Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.
Review student results
As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
Re-teach concepts as necessary
