Vernier - Acids and Bases

Activity Overview

In this lesson, students will explore how living organisms can maintain a stable internal pH - even in the event of environmental changes.

Objectives

In this experiment, students will:

  • Add an acid to a material and note the extent to which it resists changes in pH.
  • Add a base to a material and note the extent which it resists changes in pH.
  • Work with classmates to compare the ability of different materials to resist changes in pH.

About the Lesson

In this experiment, students will measure the effect of an acid and a base in water. They will also test the effect of an acid and a base on a biological material assignment to them.  Students will use the Vernier pH Senor in this experiment.
