Properties of Trapezoids

Published on 10/17/2008

Activity Overview

Students will:

  • Construct an ordinary trapezoid and an isosceles trapezoid.
  • Measure sides and angles to establish the properties of these types of trapezoids.
  • Try to alter the properties of their construction by dragging the vertices.
  • Before the Activity

Provide each student with a copy of the attached .pdf file.

    During the Activity

This activity will help students visualize the construction of a trapezoid and determine how difficult it is to construct an isosceles trapezoid. By measuring sides and angles, students can see the properties of these trapezoids preserved when their original construction is modified by dragging a vertex point.

    After the Activity

  • Review student answers
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
