What's My Line?

Activity Overview

This activity focuses on strengthening student understanding of connections among graphical, tabular, and algebraic representations of simple linear functions. They enter a simple program that allows them to determine the equations for lines, in the form Y = AX + B, based on tabular and graphical information.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 107 - 112 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Run the LINE program
  • Examine the table of values of the expression AX + B for different integer values of X
  • Study a graph of the ordered pairs satisfying the equation Y = AX + B
  • Guess the values of A and B and check whether they are correct

  • Run the program and select 2 random integer values for A and B
  • View the entry placed by the program in the graph menu or view a table of values of ordered pairs
  • Observe the graph of Y = AX + B and make a guess for the values of A and B
  • Compare the results of the two guesses
  • After the Activity

    Students complete the Questions sheet.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
