Creating Charts

Activity Overview

Students learn to represent data in a list as a bar chart. They examine statistics from the 2000 Olympic Games and determine the team that took home the most medals.

Before the Activity

  • Set up the calculator as explained in the appendix
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print the pages from the attached PDF file for the class
  • Refer to the Exploring Probability Activity Card for directions on how to enter data into a list
  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Examine the given data and create a list with country and each medal type gold, silver, and bronze as the variables
  • Enter the data into the lists
  • Highlight each list and select bar graph plot options
  • Observe the plots of each variable and answer questions based on the graphed data
  • After the Activity

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
