Activity Overview
Students explore the relationships between the side length and perimeter of a square and the edge length and surface area of a cube by manipulating geometric models. They use the models to generate a dataset, calculate successive differences, and use them to determine which type of function best models the relationship. Finally, they graph the data set as a scatter plot and use the regression tools to evaluate their conclusion.
Before the Activity
Download the attached PDF and look over the information on the first page. Distribute the Student Worksheet and attached calculator files for use during the activity.
During the Activity
Discuss the material from the activity pages with students as needed.
After the Activity
Encourage students to summarize what they have learned from completing the activity.
