Linear Functions: Slope-Intercept Form

Activity Overview

Students learn to develop the equation of a line from its graph. They also learn to write the equation of a line from the slope and the y-intercept, a point and the slope, and two points. They also investigate slopes of lines that are parallel and perpendicular.

Before the Activity

Install Topics in Algebra 1 (Chapters 1-4) App on the calculator using one of these two methods:

  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 3-28 to 3-32 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Use algebraic manipulations to convert an equation into y = mx + c form
  • In the activity Match It!, select the graph that correctly illustrates an equation
  • In the activity Line Soccer, solve an equation by using the coordinates to find the values of m and b
  • Graph a line using the given coordinates of a point and the slope
  • Find coordinates of two other points from the graph of the line
  • Use the calculator to graph lines for the two given equations and compare them
  • Identify the characteristics of parallel lines
  • Graph other equations and compare the lines formed
  • After the Activity

Students will complete the Student Worksheet and analyze the results.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
