Ratios in Regular Polygons

Activity Overview

Students use linear measurement and calculators to investigate the ratios between corresponding parts of regular polygons.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print student activity sheets pages 97 - 98 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:

  • Draw several triangles, compare them, and look for any similarities among all the triangles
  • Draw several different sized equilateral triangles, compare the triangles, and look for similarities
  • Do the same experiment with rectangles, and then squares
  • Note, the rectangles come in all shapes; the squares are all the same shape but different sizes
  • Give students the picture of several different-sized squares, and have them measure the length of the diagonal and the perimeter of each square, record their findings on the recording sheet, and look for patterns
  • Record the same data for other regular polygons of several different sizes and look for patterns
  • After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
