Forensics Case 2 - Bouncing Back: Using ground-penetrating radar to locate buried objects

Activity Overview

In this activity, students gather data to explore the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to find buried materials. They use a range finder to detect the presence of an object and to distinguish between different-shaped objects. They find the buried car and help solve a case.

Key Steps

  • Image

Large empty boxes with different objects or not objects are used to simulate plots of ground containing buried materials. A CBR2 is used as the Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR).

  • Image

Students are looking for the buried car of the oil magnate's wife. This requires analyzing distance-time graphs made with the CBR2 scanning several boxes that may or may not contain the "buried" car.
