Properties of Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

Activity Overview

In this activity, students create parallel lines and a transversal, and study the properties of the lines and their angles.

Before the Activity

Install the Cabri™: Jr. App on the students' graphing calculators using one of these two methods:

  • TI-Connect™,  a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 7 - 9 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Draw two parallel lines
  • Construct a transversal
  • Label the lines and the points of intersection
  • Measure and label angle measurements
  • Prepare a table which lists the pairs of angles, types of angles, and their measures
  • Observe that the pairs of corresponding angles are equal
  • Note that the pairs of alternate interior angles are congruent
  • Identify that the pairs of consecutive interior angles are supplementary
  • Observe that the pairs of alternate exterior angles are congruent
  • Drag an intersection point around the screen to verify whether the relationship between angles remains same
  • After the Activity

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
