What Goes Around Comes Around - But Can You Measure It? (Perimeter, Area, and Volume)

Activity Overview

Students find the area and the perimeter for several geometric shapes. They also determine the surface area and volume of spheres.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 106 - 108 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:

  • Divide an irregular geometric shape into rectangles and right triangles
  • Calculate the perimeter and area of the shape
  • Use the calculator to find the length of a missing side, given the measures of other sides in a figure
  • Repeat the steps for different figures

  • Use the correct formula to compute the surface area and volume of a sphere
  • Find the surface area and volume of objects in the solar system
  • After the Activity

Students complete the Student Activity pages.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
