Go for the Gold

Activity Overview

Students explore and use the concept of ratio in a real-world situation. They will make judgments regarding accuracy and precision of measurement.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 59 - 63 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Divide the class into teams of four
  • Measure and record the distances between the features of the statue picture
  • Measure and record the distances between features on each team member's face with the help of a string and ruler
  • Calculate ratios of facial features
  • Record the mean average ratios of each member (to the nearest thousand), mean average ratios of the group, and the class mean average ratios on the Student Worksheet
  • Compare the individual average ratios to the ratios for the Greek statue and determine which ratio is closest to the Golden ratio
  • After the Activity

Students will complete the Student Worksheet and analyze the results.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
