Students will draw and color scaled drawings of traditional quilt block designs. They then find the appropriate fraction, decimal, and percent of the overall design for each color.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 63 - 66 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:

  • Draw a quilt design on a graph paper
  • Color the design using three colors
  • Find the total area of each color and determine the fraction of the overall area for each color
  • Write down the decimal and percent equivalents for the fraction
  • After the Activity

Students complete the Student Activity pages.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, view charts and discuss the similarities and differences between the different solutions
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
