Activity Overview
Students use the calculator and their understanding of fractions to find how much of each ingredient is needed to make a large number of cookies using the given recipe.
Before the Activity
Set up the calculator as explained in the attached appendix file
See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
Print the pages from the attached PDF file for the class
During the Activity
Distribute the pages to the class.
Follow the Activity procedures:
Enter the total number of cookies to be made
Subtract the number of cookies that can be made with the given recipe and determine how many more cookies need to be made
Find the fraction of dough needed to make the additional cookies
Multiply the amount of each ingredient in the recipe by the fraction
Note the new amount of ingredients required to make the larger number of cookies
After the Activity
Review student results:
As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
Re-teach concepts as necessary
