Muddy Footprints

Activity Overview

In this activity, students will analyze the relationship between height and stride length, and then use that information to identify the mountain biker who most likely tracked muddy prints onto the clean kitchen floor. Students will use the TI-73 Explorer™ to enter the data collected into lists, create a scatter plot, and find the linear regression.

Key Steps

  • Image

In this activity, students record the height and stride length of each student in the classroom and use the information to identify the person to left muddy footprints on the floor.

  • Image

Once the data is collected, students will set up and display a scatter plot showing stride length vs height.

  • Image

Finding the linear regression of their data, students can predict the stride length of any person, based on their height. A discussion of the correlation coefficient is included in the activity.
