Randomization in Sampling and Experiments

Activity Overview

This activity covers random sampling and randomization for experiments.

Before the Activity

Install the Statistics with List Editor application on the calculator using one of these two methods:

  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™ "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 87 - 92 from the attached PDF file for your class

During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Enter the students' names, gender, and identification numbers (ID) in a list or a matrix
  • Use the calculator to generate a simple random sample of five students without repeats
  • Sort the list of ID and gender in ascending order
  • Select a random sample of five students from the class in proportion to the number of males and females in the class
  • Divide 24 students randomly into two equal groups, with and without replacements
  • Generate a sample of 12 numbers out of 24 numbers without replacement
  • Use non-consecutive integers to generate random samples
  • After the Activity

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
