Standard Form of a Parabola

Activity Overview

This activity will help students work with the standard form of a parabola y = a(x - h)^2 + k by writing an equation given the vertex and a point.

Before the Activity

For this activity the teacher and student should be logged into TI-Navigator™. First, the teacher should take the opportunity to review standard form and what (h, k) is (the vertex) and x = h is the axis of symmetry.

During the Activity

This is also a great time to review transformations with students. Through the activity center in TI-Navigator (just showing the graph) the teacher should show examples with parabolas like y = a(x – h)^2 + k and y = -a(x – h)^2 + k. The students should know by performing transformations the graph flips over the x axis. Use quick poll to ask students what kind of change is actually occurring.

After the Activity

Please use the following LearningCheck™ quiz.
