Linear Inequalities: Using Algebra

Activity Overview

Students learn to solve inequalities using one and two steps. They review the properties of inequalities.

Before the Activity

Install Topics in Algebra 1 (Chapters 1-4) App on the calculator using one of these two methods:

  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 4-11 to 4-16 from the attached PDF file for your class

    • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Solve the inequality algebraically and draw its number line graph
  • Look at the algebraic expression displayed in the activity Solve It! and decide what must be done to solve for x
  • In the activity Free Fall, observe the inequality and quickly solve for x
  • Solve additional problems involving inequalities
  • Use the calculator to store a variable, test an inequality and verify by graphing the solution

    • After the Activity

    Students will complete the Student Worksheet and analyze the results.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
