Age Estimation Revisited

Activity Overview

Students will use age estimation skills while viewing a Power Point picturing various individuals. Students will record age estimate in one column and actual age of individual pictured in a second column. Students will appropriately analyze the results. This activity is appropriate for Algebra I students.

Before the Activity

Download and send the TNS files to the students' TI-Nspire handhelds. agepptSOL.tns includes the solutions for the student file.
Students should understand how to use the TI-Nspire technology to create a scatter plot, how to obtain a linear model according to instructors expectations, using the spreadsheet to determine the best estimator, creating a box plot and explaining results of data analyzation.
Review any components of TI-Nspire that are needed to complete this activity effectively.
A worksheet accompanies this activity which students can complete as a hard copy for a written assignment. The worksheet may be completed at the discretion of the teacher. All answers to questions should be submitted in sentence form and the teacher should indicate to students the algebraic manipulation work required on the worksheet.

During the Activity

  • This activity is designed to be student-centered. The teacher may act as a facilitator while students work independently or cooperatively. The teacher will inform students in which manner they are to work.
  • The ready-to-use worksheet will provide a written assignment which can be used for daily credit points.
  • The file titled Ageppt SOL shows the expected results of working through the activity and the screenshots are included in the step-by-step instructions.
  • After the Activity

  • Similar activities could be developed using other pictures such as cars of various years or other focuses of interest.
  • Students may create a power point, subject to teacher approval of appropriate content, for use in the classroom for extra credit.
