Coordinate Geometry The Equation of a Line

Activity Overview

This activity teaches students the relationship between the slope, y-intercept, and the equation of a line.

Before the Activity

Install the Cabri™: Jr. App on the students' graphing calculators using one of these two methods:

  • TI-Connect™,  a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 1 - 13 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Plot a point in the first quadrant and display its coordinates
  • Plot a point on the Y-axis and display its coordinates
  • Draw a line connecting these two points and display its equation
  • Display the slope of the line
  • Drag the point in the first quadrant and observe the change in the equation of the line
  • Drag the y-intercept along the y-axis and observe the effect on the equation of the line
  • Make conjectures about the slope and y-intercept
  • After the Activity

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
