Describing Categorical Data - Advanced Placement

Activity Overview

Students categorize data using tables and bar charts. They also determine relative frequencies.

Before the Activity

Install the Statistics with List Editor application on the calculator using one of these two methods:

  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™ "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 79 - 83 from the attached PDF file for your class

During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Group the building height data into three height categories
  • Enter the building height data as a list
  • Plot a histogram for the data
  • Draw a comparative bar chart
  • Identify which city has more building in each height category
  • Create a matrix with the data
  • Determine the number of buildings in one city in a specific height category (joint relative frequency)
  • Determine the total number of buildings in a specific height category in all the cities studied (marginal relative frequency)
  • Given a condition determine the conditional relative frequencies
  • After the Activity

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
