Sample Means

Activity Overview

In this activity, students will recognize that elements of a sample from a normal population will vary symmetrically around the mean of the population, with values near the mean occurring more frequently than those further from the mean. Also, students will recognize that the means of different samples from a normal population will vary symmetrically around the mean of the population, with values near the mean occurring more frequently than those further from the mean, but in a narrower interval than that of individual elements of the population.

Key Steps

The graph on this page shows a normal distribution with mean 0 and standard deviation 1, representing a population of values. Students should recall the empirical rule and their knowledge of normal distributions. They will then predict what they expect as the shape, center, and spread of the distribution of values randomly selected from this population.
