Design a Quilt

Activity Overview

Students learn to use pattern blocks to build a two dimensional design, and use the calculator to determine the value of the design.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 37 - 40 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:

  • Build a small quilt design using pattern blocks or paper blocks
  • Transfer the design to the triangular grid on a recording sheet using crayons or markers
  • Assign a value of 1 cent to the green triangle and with the help of the calculator find the value of the quilt
  • Identify the operations to use to find the number of triangles
  • Repeat the activity with other geometric shapes and new values
  • After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
