Activity Overview

Students also explore probability and patterns in place value by using two spinners and analyze and record the results.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 59 - 62 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

    Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:

  • Make a simple spinning device
  • Each student in the class spins the Spinner A (marked with 1, 2, and 3) once and records the results
  • Each students repeats the activity using Spinner B (marked with 10, 20, and 30) and records the results
  • Play a game where students guess the sums of the spins
  • Collect data of spins and record it on the sheet
  • Use the calculator for finding sums
  • Explore probability and patterns that emerge and analyze the results
  • After the Activity

    Students record data on the Recording Sheet.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
