Activity Overview

In this activity, students use the calculator to learn about the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents.

Before the Activity

  • Set up the calculator as explained in the appendix file
  • See the attached activity PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print the pages from the attached activity PDF file for the class
  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

    Addition of Two Proper Fractions:

  • Enter the numerator and the denominator of the first fraction, the addition operation, and the second fraction
  • Observe the steps and answer on the calculator


  • Subtracting Mixed Numbers
  • Enter the whole number of the mixed fraction as an unit, then the fraction, the operation of subtraction, and the second fraction
  • Compute the answer


  • Improper fractions:
  • Use the appropriate key to convert a mixed number to an improper fraction
  • Enter each fraction and add


  • Fractions, Decimals, and Percents:
  • Convert the fraction to a decimal using the decimal key
  • Convert the decimal into a percent using the percent key
  • Observe the answers and steps displayed on the screen
  • After the Activity

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
