Direct Variation with Powers: Surface Area and Volume

Activity Overview

Students find the approximate surface area and volume of an apple, measuring circumference 3 ways, using the mean of the measurements to find the radius. Each students enters the results in a Table on the board.

Before the Activity

Students should have access to TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus.

During the Activity

Directions for the activity and calculations (use cm scale) are listed on the board so it may be used as a warmup following the formal lessons.

After the Activity

Review student results and, as a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging. Re-teach concepts as necessary.
