Activity Overview
Constructing regular polygons
Before the Activity
Students will:
1.Construct an equilateral triangle, a square and a regular pentagon using rotations
2.Measure sides and angles to visualize equilateral and equiangular properties
3.Extend the principles to a polygon with any number of sides
During the Activity
Explore relationships (including congruence and similarity) among classes of two- and three-dimensional geometric objects, make and test conjectures about them, and solve problems involving them.
This activity will help students visualize the construction of regular polygons and conceptualize equilateral properties through measurement and movement of their construction.
Extension questions are built into the activity.
After the Activity
Review student answers:
As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
Re-teach concepts as necessary
