Mix It Up: Mixing Liquids of Different Temperatures

Activity Overview

In this activity, students' will use temperature sensors to measure temperatures of water samples before and after mixing. They compare the mixing temperatures to a linear prediction.

Before the Activity

  • Connect temperature probes to Channel 1 and Channel 2 on the CBL 2™ or Vernier LabPro®
  • Connect the CBL 2 or LabPro to the calculator using the Unit-to-Unit cable
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 61 - 67 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Fill Cup 1 with 100 ml cold water and Cup 2 with 150 ml hot water
  • Place the CH1 probe in Cup 1 and the CH2 probe in Cup 2, and record the temperature readings in the Data Table
  • Pour the contents of Cup 1 into Cup 2 and record the final temperature of Cup 2 in the Data table
  • Repeat the experiment with equal volumes of hot and cold water
  • Understand how to predict mixture temperature and verify the prediction
  • After the Activity

Students' will complete the Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet and answer the questions listed on it.

    Review student results:

  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
